The Science of Languages: Linguistics

Study of the ‘Science of Language’ is called Linguistics. Following subject helps us understand a language from its formation to the pronunciation, it possibly answers every ‘How’ in the context. The Language Scientists are known to be Linguists.

Linguists predominantly judge the language by observing relationship between sound and its meaning. With various disciplines of linguistics, it covers every bit of the language. In the quest to find out the way a language grows and develops with time, linguistics is something been continuing since decades.

‘Historical and evolutionary linguists’ are involved in studying how languages change with a period of time whereas ‘sociologists’ discuss about its development amongst different groups of people. It seemed to have developed from ‘Philology’ which is the study of language in oral and written historical sources.   

Linguistic Description

Linguistic analysis is generally ‘’descriptive’’, i.e. without any biasis or of preconceived mindset they primarily focus the usual usage of language which could be correct or not. They just objectively determine the language communicated in everyday setting by all sets of people.It emphasizes on the practical approach to understand the subject. Owing to its nature we call it the Science of Language.

For instance fewer than or less than both are considered by descriptive grammarians but those who are engaged in prescriptive linguists argue over it. Over a period of time linguistics has developed various disciplines in answer to the demand of time but it truly is study of the natural state of any language.
